3 Problems Likely To Affect Your Rainwater Tanks

A higher percentage of the planet is made of water. However, only a small percentage of this is usable for drinking and other purposes. That has led to a constant shortage of water that is ideal for use. You can deal with this problem by collecting rainwater. You will need to use a harvesting unit for you to get cleaner water. However, you will likely face some issues with your tank system when collecting rainwater. Here are some problems you will come across when using rainwater tanks and their causes.

Smelly Rainwater

Sometimes, the water will leave the tank with an unfavourable smell. In other cases, the water may also taste funny. In such situations, algae may be growing inside the container. You can prevent the algae growth by sealing it and blocking the entry of sunlight.  After that, use chlorine to kill any existing algae. Using tank screens and rain heads can also prevent algae growth. The lousy odour of the rainwater can also come from not removing sediments before another rainfall season. Using gutter mesh and first flush diversion can decrease the accumulation of deposits. You should also check the tank for the presence of dead animals. If there are any present, remove them and get rid of the water.

Overflowing Water from the Gutters

When the gutters are overflowing during rainfall, then they are likely blocked. The drains are mostly blocked due to overhanging plants or tall trees next to them. The vegetation will deposit branches and leaves on the roof and gutters. Thus, only small amounts of water can pass through. Cut off any overhanging vegetation around the drains. You should also consider installing a gutter mesh to prevent the blockage.

Collecting Little Amounts of Water

Sometimes you may not collect as much water as you should. When that happens, it could be due to a blockage or a leak in your rainwater harvesting unit. When unsure where the problem is, you may need to do a full check of the rainwater collecting system. That way, you can find out where the water gets diverted before getting to the tank. Thus, you will need to hire an expert who knows the system best. They will find out what is affecting your unit and fix it in no time.

If you are experiencing any issues with your rainwater tanks, then it may need servicing. Regular checks from professionals will make you are always getting clean water. Waiting until the last minute to deal with any problems with your tank could prove dangerous.
